VETERANS' MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MINUTES p.l of 2 THURSDAY, FEB. 22, 2007 6:30PM TOWN OFFICE 20TH MEETING
In attendance: Harry Decker, Pat Ford, Ed Ford, Tom Thompson, Barbara Currier, Russell Moren, Sandy Ray
Call to order: 6:35 PM
Minutes of the Jan. 1 l'', 2007 meeting: Tom Thompson moved, Ed Ford seconded and the vote carried (5-0 in favor, with two abstentions due to non- attendance at the Jan. meeting) to accept the minutes as presented.
The information (letter and site map showing to-scale location of current library septic system and additional tank and pumping station for library addition) provided by Bruce Barnard to the library board was presented. Much discussion ensued relative to locating the new monument on the site of the present one.
There remains a significant number of unconfirmed names on the list of 425 names under review for inclusion on the new monument. However, Ed Ford reported that 425 is a figure which will probably not change much as no more names are currently being sought and some of those on the list now may not be confirmed. For purposes of planning the design and size of the new monument, 425 is a reasonable number to use.
Ed Ford presented a drawing for a new monument design being offered by the Grange for consideration. The custom Rock of Ages civic memorial design consists of three upright stone panels placed side by side on a 11 foot 4 inch long by 20 -24 inch wide stone base. Each of the two end panels would measure 5 1/2 feet tall and flank a 6 foot tall center panel. The footing needed to accommodate the base would have to be larger than the base and would require room for excavation. The required depth of the foundation would be 5 feet. Ed Ford reported an estimated cost of under $44,000 delivered and set using information provided by the Rock of Ages Company. That amount does not include site work or foundation costs. Ed Ford moved, Pat Ford seconded a motion to arrange a meeting with Bruce Barnard, Dick Marden, Larry Webster, and Sandy Ray pertaining
to locating the new monument in the position of the current one. After some discussion the motion was withdrawn.
Harry Decker moved, Barbara Currier seconded and the vote was unanimous (7-0 in favor) of the following Memorial Committee members having a meeting with Bruce Barnard and Dick Marden to examine the feasibility of the Grange proposal: Russell Moren, Tom Tompson, Sandy Ray. The results of the meeting(s) will be presented at the next Memorial Comm. meeting in March. A question was raised about the ability of the committee to pay for Bruce Barnard's consult if a charge was incurred. Harry Decker reminded the committee that there is money available for this type of planning expense.
Veterans' Memorial Comm. minutes of Feb. 22, 2007 (cont.) p. 2 of 2
Harry Decker has asked the selectboard to reach a decision about what can or can not be done pertaining to Trudy/ Irma's garden area should an alternate location for the monument become a necessity. The question will be on the agenda at the next selectboard meeting. He also reported that the selectboard will be placing on the March 2007 ballot a request for another $10,000 to be added to the memorial fund this year. The selectboard has proposed that the town assume 1/2 the cost of the new memorial with the remaining funds to be raised by the Grange. Ed has been asked to verify the ability of the Grange to accept tax deductible donations.
Next meeting: March 22, 2007 at 6:45.
Tom Thompson moved, Russell Moren seconded, and the vote was unanimous (7-0 in favor) of adjourning the meeting at 8:04 PM.
Respectfully submitted, Sandy Ray
