MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MINUTES
Thursday, June 1st, 2006 6:30 PM Holderness Town Hall 13th meeting
In attendance: Pat Ford, Ed Ford, Tom Thompson, Harry Decker, Barbara Currier, Sandy Ray, Sherry Gould, independent researcher, and Dave Driscoll, of David Driscoll Designs
The meeting was called to order by Harry Decker at 6:35 PM.
Ed Ford moved, Tom Thompson seconded and the vote was unanimous (6-0 in favor) of accepting the minutes of the April 5th, 2006 meeting as presented.
Sandy Ray moved, Ed Ford seconded and the vote was unanimous (6-0 in favor) of accepting the minutes of the May 4th, 2006 meeting as presented.
Grange update: The Manchester Union Leader and the Laconia Citizen agreed to release news articles pertaining to the name search. There was no charge for these public service announcements. It was noted that the write-ups contained some errors and omissions. The grange has decided to run ads in the following publications: the Manchester Union Leader, Laconia Citizen, Plymouth Record, Meredith News, Penny Saver, and possibly the Concord Monitor with a target date of June 22, 2006. A bulk mailing to the residents of Holderness will be sent out on the same date.
The town website now offers a place for visitors to view the letter that will be sent out from the grange as well as the list of criteria being used to determine eligibility for inclusion on the new monument. Citizens are being asked to submit information by the end of July. The current projected timing for the completion of the name project is the end of Sept.
Sherry Gould indicated that the biggest concern at this time is obtaining paperwork that verifies the time of service of veterans that are known to have served. To complete this phase of the work the individuals, or their family members, must be contacted one by one. It is projected that this work will be completed by June 22, 2006. Any unverified names can then be sent to the National Archives for verification. This process can take from one to three months.
Site discussion: Dave Driscoll presented a computer model of his concept of a location for the monument at the library. Pat and Ed Ford expressed their dissatisfaction with Dave’s concept stating that it was their understanding that the presentation would show the monument located in the position the current WW1 monument now stands. Ed said that he would provide Dave with photos taken after the joint meeting of the library board and the memorial committee that show the foam board mock ups of the memorial stones in that location. Dave was asked to create a visual image that reflects that design for the committee to view. Harry volunteered to check with Dave about preparing the new model in time for the next meeting.
Criteria change: Serry Gould and Ed Ford reported that dates for the duration of two wars, the Spanish American and WWII need to be revised in order to be more in line with the criteria used by towns
to determine eligibility for tax credits. Tom Thompson moved, Pat Ford seconded and the vote was unanimous (6-0 in favor) of accepting the revised dates. Sherry also reported that at the time of the Revolutionary War there were people who provided what is known as “patriotic services” to assist the war effort. The DAR and other organizations recognize these people as eligible for membership in their organizations. The memorial committee agreed that any Holderness citizens meeting the DAR criteria would be included on the new monument.
Next meeting date: July 13th, 2006, 6:30 at the town hall
Adjournment: Barbara Currier moved, Tom Thompson seconded and the vote was unanimous (6-0 in favor) to adjourn the meeting at 7:50 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Ray
