MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MINUTES
Thursday, September 28, 2006
6:30 pm Holderness Town Hall
16th Meeting
In attendance: Russell Moren, Harry Decker, pat Ford, Ed Ford, Tom Thompson, Barbara Currier, Sandy Ray
Minutes: Summarized but not voted on as secretary thought she had forgotten to write them up after the August 31 meeting. Actually she had them with her all the time!
Names project: Grange has indicated that the names project’s final cut-off date is March 31, 2007.
Projected date for entire project completion is by Veterans’ Day ‘07
Harry Decker suggested a temporary 3 panel painted plywood structure containing all currently confirmed names to be placed at the library until the new monument is in place.
Ed Ford announced that the Grange would be willing to renovate the current wooden monument by utilizing enlarged photos of names now listed there to be placed behind the glass, and repairing the gold letters on top of the monument as a temporary measure until the new monument is in place. This solution did not seem very feasible as the name currently on the monument are damaged so getting a photographic image would only reproduce what is already there. Also, photographic images do not hold up well in sunlight. The present structure is also very fragile. It is unlikely that it could withstand the work necessary to complete the Grange’s temporary fix.
The discussion returned to Harry Decker’s suggestion. Several people were mentioned as potential painters of the names: Stan Graton, Sonny Ambrose, Dave Prescott. Although several members of the committee thought the cost of lettering the names would be prohibitive, it was agreed that nothing would be lost by inquiring. Barbara Currier moved, Tom Thompson seconded, and the motion was accepted (7-0 in favor) of having Harry investigate the cost of his proposal.
Tom Thompson recapped the information garnered from a conversation with Bobby Guyotte reported at the last meeting by Harry Decker in Tom’s absence. Placing the monument in the location at the library preferred by the majority of the Memorial Committee will definitely be placing it at a risk for damage during the construction of the proposed library addition. Because such things are often left up to the contractor’s level of comfort, the monument might well have to be moved during the construction. Tom is still planning to talk with Adrienne Robie who is well acquainted with the site.
Questions regarding the library tying in to the Curry Place septic system were discussed. One of the big questions is who would be responsible if there were a problem with that system that would be shared with Walter’s Basin Restaurant. This is of concern because restaurants in general are notorious for producing large quantities of greasy waste water which cause frequent septic related problems. There is also a question about the present condition of the Walter’s/ Curry Place system. The committee is interested to know whether the library is considering or would consider the tie-in option if it proves to be feasible and if the town would pay the cost. Ed Ford moved, Barbara Currier seconded and the motion carried (7-0 in favor) to have Harry Decker check into this situation with the select board and
Dick Marden and to have Sandy Ray bring back a reply from the library trustees as to their stance on the subject for the next meeting of this committee.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 19, 2006 at the Town Hall at 6:30 pm. Henry Cross from Enfield will be invited to attend that meeting. Harry Decker asked for the committee members to be thinking about the amount to request at the ’07 Town Meeting to move forward with this project. The current funds available are in the range of $20,000.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Ray
