Holderness Recreation Board Meeting
April 13, 2009
Board Members Present: Wendy Werner, Director, Tom Stepp (chair), Sid Lovett (Selectman )
Biff Sutcliffe (secretary), Janis Messier, Bob Stark, Fawn Ouellette
1) Minutes of 16 March 2009 were approved.
2) Budget Update – Wendy introduced a new accounting system that is being implemented. Presently it shows only the revenue side of the budget. The new system looks to be highly detailed and will help us understand more accurately the distribution of funds from month to month.
3) Programs-
• Quick Start Tennis is going well with two groups.
• Pee Wee Soccer has no sign-ups presently.
• “Safe On My Own” program is still undersubscribed.
• Floor Hockey – cancelled – not enough interest
• Early Bird Exercise and Volleyball – continue
Day Camp –
• Wendy heard from a staff member, that we thought was going to return, that he has had to make other plans. We now have an opening for a male counselor of college age or older.
problems will need to be worked out.
• Registrations are behind last year with only 18 campers to date. Wendy will be attending the Camp Night at Plymouth State on May 5th to recruit more campers, and Ann will be doing more at the HCS to generate interest.
4) Holderness 250th – Wendy reported to the Board that she attended the organizational meeting of the committee on April 6th. The meeting was well attended with the next meeting set for June 1st. The dates of the celebration have been set for August 5,6 and 7 of 2010.
5) Concert Series –
Wendy met with Walter Johnson and Larry Mowbray and they are splitting duties with regard to the four concerts planned for July 20th and 27th and August 3rd and 10th. Larry is arranging for the music, Wendy a program for the children and Walter is investigation supplemental funding.
6) Beach Update-
• Wendy seems to be making progress toward hiring staff to offer swim lessons.
• After a workshop she attended regarding public beaches, Wendy shared her growing concern about the depth of water at the raft and the real potential for injuries after diving. The speaker at the workshop suggested that 9 feet of water is the minimum for diving. Since we rarely, if ever, have that much water under the raft this is troublesome. Wendy has shared her concern with Walter Johnson and he will have an informal discussion with PRIMEX regarding any suggestions they have.
• The Board has growing concern with regard to erosion at the Town Beach and Wendy reported that after she attended a review of the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act regulations, she felt that we should take a more proactive approach to the problem. To that end she will meet with Walter Johnson, Chris Devine from SLA and perhaps Roger LaRochelle from SLCT to review our options and set a plan.
7) Correspondence – none to report
8) Other – Wendy mentioned that she had been nominated to take on the task of Chair of the New Hampshire Recreation Directors Association. Unfortunately she knew the bylaws too well and had to remind the Association that only full-time directors are eligible for the position.
6) NEXT MEETING: Monday, May 11th at 6:00 PM
Respectfully submitted,
George D. Sutcliffe, Jr. (secretary)
