Holderness Recreation Board Meeting
September 28, 2009
Board Members Present: Wendy Werner, Director, Tom Stepp (chair), Woody Laverack (Selectman )
Biff Sutcliffe (secretary), Janis Messier, Bob Stark, Fawn Ouellette, Shelly Swanson
1) Minutes of August 17, 2009 were not able to be approved due to a lack of a quorum of people present at last meeting.
2) Budget Update – We have been told to build a level budget for the next fiscal year. Our next meeting will be devoted to working on the first draft.
3) Programs-
• Tennis – small numbers but we made some money.
• Swimming Lessons – smaller attendance this year but we made a bit more money. Wendy
worked hard to make this program run as she had to juggle a number of instructors.
• Science Week – We had 22 participants (14 older and 8 in the younger program) and we made
money as well. Reports from parents indicate that it was well received. There seems
to be some discrepancy in the overall evaluation of the program between our staff, the
parents and the staff of the Science Week.
• Summer Escape (Day Camp) –
This year we had 212 camper weeks as compared to only 96 last year and 112 the year
Before. The add three weeks helped as well as having a theme-based approach to many
of the weeks. 27 resident families took advantage of our program and 8 non-resident
did as well. Wendy is now working on collecting $2,400 in outstanding tuition payments.
The final budget numbers will show that we came out ahead this year!
4) Holderness 250th – next meeting will be on October 13 @ 6:30 at the Fire Safety Building.
5) Concert Series – No news to report.
6) Beach Update-
• Toilets are gone. The contract with the new provider saved the Town hundreds of dollars.
In the future we will discuss extending the season of the toilets from Memorial Day
to Columbus Day since the beach can be very active during these extended times.
• It was brought to our attention that the Beach Staff were not as diligent as they should have
been regarding checking Beach Passes. It is believed that quite a few families used the
beach all summer and never purchased a beach pass. Wendy reported that the number
of passes sold for the summer was down considerably from past years.
• Wendy and Biff will bring in the swim lines and buoy on the 5th of October. Wendy will
arrange to have the raft put into winter storage as usual.
7) Correspondence - Ellen King has requested that Bob, Tom, Fawn and Shelly stop by the Town Office
as soon as convenient to get sworn in for their new terms of office.
8) Other – The Squam Lakes Conservation Society in conjunction with the Newfound Lake Association
are presenting a program (Nov. 5 at 6:30 at the HCS) for the general public on tracking
animals. The name of the program is “Keeping Track – Wildlife.” More information
will be released in the coming weeks. Wendy has arranged for the use of HCS.
6) NEXT MEETING: Monday, October 19th at 5:30 PM
Respectfully submitted,
George D. Sutcliffe, Jr. (secretary)
