Holderness Recreation Board Meeting
November 9, 2009
Board Members Present: Wendy Werner, Director, Tom Stepp (chair), Woody Laverack (Selectman )
Biff Sutcliffe (secretary), Janis Messier, Bob Stark, Fawn Ouellette, Shelly Swanson
1) Minutes of September 28, 2009 were approved.
2) Budget Building: Beach for 2010 - Wendy presented a draft of the new budget and went over the few changes she suggested from this year’s budget. The Board agreed and approved the budget she proposed.
Recreation for 2010 – Again, Wendy presented a carefully planned budget with a few changes from last year’s budget and the Board agreed with the changes and asked Wendy to go ahead and formalize the budget with the understanding that we will work on her evaluation and merit pay increase as the Selectboard allows.
As part of our discussions about the two budgets two topics surfaced that will require further discussion after some research by Wendy. These are: 1) using a vehicle, such as Survey Monkey as suggested by Fawn, to poll the parents of our Summer Escape program. We have not had great luck in getting our surveys back and Fawn suggested that Survey Monkey might be simple and direct enough to get better participation. And 2) Wendy brought up the fact that SLA has now started using Face Book as a way of getting greater participation and disseminating information. She is in the process of looking into such a website for us to use. Discussion about using photos of children and how the page would be used followed. More discussion will follow after Wendy has time to discuss this idea with Walter and
others.
3) Programs-
Volleyball – A discussion about redefining the minimum age came about after Wendy mentioned that some volleyball participants voiced some concern that perhaps some of the participants are a bit too young to participate. Wendy reminded us that we moved the minimum age up from 14 to 16 a few years ago and that she wrote it in as 18 for this year. After some discussion the Board recommended that we move it back down to 16 but that anyone younger would not be allowed to participate. We did however suggest that Wendy mention to the volleyball participants that we would love to see a program for younger people develop from the present group. Wendy has a 1st of the season meeting with the volleyball group this Thursday and will bring this idea to the
group.
Wildlife Event – the Wildlife Event – Keeping Track – was a great success with close to 75 citizens coming to the HCS to see hundreds of pelts and skulls and see magnificent slides and talk about indicator species of fauna in our area. Holderness Recreation was one of half dozen or so sponsors that brought this program to our area.
4) Other - • The Board voted to donate two one-week Summer Escape scholarships to the PTA for their holiday auction.
• Wendy reported that she had a good trip to the National Convention of Parks and Recreation Organizations. Overall she found the programs to be valuable and some good contacts were made.
• Wendy reported that she has been asked (and she accepted) to be on the Oversight Committee of the Land and Water Conservation Fund as a State representative to the this Federal Program which judges grant proposals.
5) NEXT MEETING: Monday, December 7th at 5:30 PM
Respectfully submitted,
George D. Sutcliffe, Jr. (secretary)
