Highway Department

The Public Works Department is responsible for year-round maintenance of all roads in Town, with the exception of State highways and private roads. The Town road network consists of approximately 38 miles of roads (19 miles of gravel road and 19 miles of paved streets). The Department has four full-time employees who work out of the Public Works Garage off Beede Road.

Equipment within the Department consists of:

  • 2 - large six-wheeler dump trucks with sander in body & plow
  • 1 - one ton pickup truck with slide in sander & plow
  • 1 - one ton dump truck with slide in sander & plow
  • 1 - backhoe
  • 1 - grader

Annually the Town appropriates $150,000 for the road capital improvement program, and generally the Department coordinates one large road reconstruction and/or paving project in cooperation with a private contractor. One of the primary objectives of the Department is the winter maintenance of roads, which includes plowing and sand/salt operations.
